Illinois Storm Chasers

(9:15AM – Sunday, April 20th, 2025) Sunday morning update on a storm system moving through the region, which will bring a couple of waves of shower and t’storm activity to the state from this morning through early Monday morning. Severe t’storms will be possible with some of this activity.

Timing…
•This Morning – Early Monday Morning, April 20-21st.

Location…
•Much of Illinois.

Impacts…
•A level 1 to 2 severe t’storm threat is in place across a large portion of Illinois, for the likelihood of isolated to widely scattered severe t’storms.
•Large hail, damaging winds and a couple of tornadoes will be possible with activity.

Update…
•With this update, little to no changes were needed, as the going forecast is on track.

Discussion…
•An initial wave of shower and t’storms activity is lifting across the state this morning. In the wake of this activity, a warm front is expected to quickly lift north across the state. There is a conditional chance that a few isolated showers and t’storms may develop in the vicinity of this lifting warm front during the afternoon, across generally the heart of the state. Should this occur, this activity would have the opportunity to become severe, with all modes of severe weather possible. However, once again, this is only a conditional chance of this scenario occurring. In any case, of greatest focus will be severe t’storm activity that develops and tracks across Missouri and Arkansas during the afternoon. This activity will press into Western and Southwestern Illinois this evening, eventually pushing deeper into and across the state tonight and into early Monday morning. All modes of severe weather will be possible with this activity. With time, the severe t’storm threat will gradually wane with this activity, which is why higher severe t’storm probabilities are in place closer to the Illinois/Missouri border.
