Illinois Storm Chasers

(8:15PM – Friday, April 18th, 2025) Friday evening update on a storm system moving through the region, which will bring a round of showers and t’storms to a large portion of the state from this evening through Saturday morning. Severe t’storms will be possible with some of this activity.

Timing…
•Late Friday Afternoon – Saturday Morning, April 18-19th.

Location…
•Northeastern, Central & Southern Illinois.

Impacts…
•A level 1 to 2 severe t’storm threat is in place across a large portion of Illinois, for the likelihood of isolated to widely scattered severe t’storms.
•Large hail, damaging winds and an isolated tornado will be possible with activity.
•Environmental conditions will be supportive of the possibility of occurrences of damaging winds 75MPH+ and hail larger than 2.00”.

Update…
•With this update, we have adjusted severe t’storm probabilities based on real time observations and trends. The most notable change was to remove severe t’storm probabilities across Northwestern Illinois, as the cold front has passed and the threat has come to an end for this event. Elsewhere, a severe t’storm threat remains possible from this evening through Saturday morning.

Discussion…
•While a few isolated/scattered showers and t’storms have developed along a cold front advancing across Northern and Western Illinois late this afternoon and evening, capping has kept more noteworthy development in check thus far. As the evening progresses and as we push into tonight, additional scattered showers and t’storms will develop across portions of Central/Southern Illinois, on southwest into Missouri and Oklahoma. This activity will then track northeastward across portions of Central/Southern Illinois tonight and Saturday morning.
