Illinois Storm Chasers

(10:15AM – Tuesday, April 1st, 2025) Tuesday morning update on a potent storm system that will move through the region, with another period of high synoptic winds being likely across the state from early Wednesday morning through early Wednesday night.

Timing…
•Early Wednesday Morning – Early Wednesday Night, April 2nd.

Location…
•All of Illinois.

Impacts…
•Peak high wind gusts of 40-55MPH will be likely across much of the state during this timeframe.
•The high winds will have the potential to blow around light-weight/loose items, and may cause isolated tree damage and power outages.

Update…
•With this update, we have increased expected high winds across Eastern and Southern Illinois. This change was based on consistency within weather guidance and increasing confidence in the likelihood of more widespread higher wind gusts across this area.

Discussion…
•As another potent storm system moves through the region, high synoptic winds will be likely across the state from early Wednesday morning through early Wednesday night. With a stronger lower-level jet in place and adequate atmospheric mixing, high winds will be likely across the state during this period. Winds on Wednesday will be southerly ahead of the storm system, eventually transitioning westerly Wednesday night, as the storm system passes.
