Illinois Storm Chasers

(11:45AM – Wednesday, March 19th, 2025) Wednesday morning update on a storm system that will move through the region, with a deformation axis of precipitation will develop on the backside, bringing a period of snow likely across portions of Northern and Central Illinois between this evening and Thursday morning.

Timing…
•This Evening – Thursday Morning, March 19-20th.

Location…
•Northern & Central Illinois.

Impacts…
•Snow accumulation ranging from a trace to 1″ will be likely across most affected areas. However, a corridor of 1-3″ snowfall amounts will be likely on of either side of I-80.
•With marginal temperatures during this event… Snowfall will be heavy/wet, compacting/melting will occur during the event and greatest snowfall accumulation will be on colder surfaces.
•Banding will be likely in the snowfall corridor, with periods of moderate to heavy snowfall possible.
•High winds of 35-55MPH will lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Update…
•With this update, we have introduced a firm corridor featuring expected snowfall accumulation totals of 1-3″. This addition was made due to increasing confidence in the expected amounts occurring on a widespread coverage level within this corridor. Also, model guidance has finally honed in on the location of this corridor of higher snowfall accumulation amounts.

Discussion…
•As a storm system moves through the region, a deformation axis of precipitation will develop on the backside this evening. As dynamics take hold and colder air filters in, precipitation will transition from rain to snow this evening/tonight across Northern and Central Illinois. A period of snow will be likely across these areas, from transition on into Thursday morning.
While a larger area of snowfall accumulation of a trace to 1″ can be expected across Northern and Central Illinois, a corridor of 1-3″ snowfall amounts will be likely on of either side of I-80.
